Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. After her father's departure the family of Ford, they were looked after by her mother, grandmother and godparents. As a young infant, Ford struggled with obsessive/compulsive disorders and anxiety caused by word associations. Ford became interested in the field of acting during her teenage years and she became a member of the National Youth Theatre. Ford gained entry to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, but decided after a week that she was a poor fit there. Ford applied instead for admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama and finally won an interview on her fourth try. Shaun Dingwall - who later played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who was among her fellow students. Ford could graduate in 1993. She made her television debut in the 1992 episode Surgical Spirit. She adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Through the Nineties, Tate could be seen on television in programmes such as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. Also, she was a regular performer in the theatre, eventually becoming a member of with the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate gained recognition for her stand-up comedy and has been added to her portfolio in the year 1996.
